Nollick Ghennal from Reayrtys - an end of year review

It’s been an exciting and busy 2023 for us, so as Christmas approaches we thought we'd wish a Nollick Ghennal as Blein Vie Noa diuish ooilley and give a quick recap of some of the things we;ve been up to over the past 12 months.

In April we gave evidence to Tynwald's Constitution, Legal Affairs and Justice Committee. After submitting our whitepaper reviewing progress on the Isle of Man's constitutional arrangements we gave oral evidence to Tynwald’s CLAJ Committee inquiry on the Constitution. You can read a summary of our evidence here.

After the Chief Minister’s appeared in front of the UK's Justice Committee in May, we published an analysis of the discussion highlighting our concerns that the Isle of Man is falling behind other Crown Dependencies. Take a read here.

In anticipation of the milestone vote in Tynwald in Lawrie Hooper's motion to remove voting rights from the Bishop, we published a position paper to help inform the debate. You can read that here.

In the Autumn we submitted a response to the Treasury’s consultation on Manx money, arguing for a much needed re-design that puts Manx faces and the Manx language on our currency to boost our distinct, international identity. We explained our reasoning on the Reayrtys blog.

As we came to the end of the year we were delighted to work with Paul Craine MLC to publish his explantion of the petition he was bringing to Tynwald to get MHKs to agree that the Isle of Man should have access to the benefits of maritime holdings up to the median line between the Island and UK. Crucially, the motion also called for CoMin to enter discussions with the UK's Ministry of Justice and the Crown Estates Commissioners to acheive this policy.

With Paul succeeding on getting his motion passed in the December sitting of Tynwald we look forward to tracking this important opportunity in 2024.

Hopefully we will get a chance to speak with some of you in the New Year, but in the meantime, if you want to learn more about our plans please do get in touch with us.

With best wishes / Lhiats dy firrinagh
